The Coach Steve Clark PhD Show with John Nelson Tennis and Martial Arts

Coach Steve Clark PhD Show

& Coach John Nelson, Tennis and Martial Arts

Thanks so much for tuning in to the show. Today, like every day on the show, is special because I get to talk with a very dear friend and collegiate tennis colleague of mine, John Nelson.  I can guarantee you have never heard a podcast like this since both John and I have been involved in martial arts for many years and his recent book Sensei Tennis: Martial Arts (and more) in the Mastery of tennis will guide our conversation.  You will not want to miss the unending connections and teaching points whether you are a player, coach or parent and whether you have any experience in the martial arts or not. We will discuss Growth mindset, calm mind, balance, fluid power, confidence under pressure, staying in the present, visualization for correction and execution, anticipation strategy and and more.

In his 40 or so years of coaching at Hawaii, San Diego State, Hayward State and UC Davis John coached numerous All Americans, conference championships, and NCAA D2 title, was conference, regional and National coach of the year during his tenor.  Not only did he mentor players and teams to the NCAA tournament but also players onto the pro tour in the likes of Alex Waske who ended up snapping Nadal’s 24 match win streak.  John is a very good friend, a man of integrity and discipline and has shaped the lives of many college players and coaches around him. He is a third degree black belt in Jujitsu and his training and coaching go hand in hand.
