Coach Steve Clark PhD Show
Jason Harnett, USTA Wheelchair Tennis
Hello everyone, this is Steve Clark, and thanks so much for tuning in to the show. I’d like to thank Wayne Bryan for the intro and Mike n Bob Bryan for the music. A special thanks to all they do for tennis through the Bryan Bro foundation and more.
If you are ready to be inspired, challenged, and want to share one of my shows with everyone you know, today is your day. I will do a 1000 pushups if you can listen to this podcast in its entirety and NOT have it affect your appreciation for what you have, your learning something new, or motivate you to greater things. Here are two examples of why I am confident of my claim above: watch these short clips of these amazing ladies Dana Mathewson and Mackenzie Soldan.
Today my guest, Jason Harnett and I will be discussing wheelchair tennis not only in the US but around the world. Players both young and old, parents, and coaches, will be changed. You will not be the same not because of what Jason has done but because of what the players and leaders in WheelChair tennis are doing and what Jason is sharing today.
While he is the USTA National Manager and Head Coach of Team USA (since October 2016) over the years he has amassed numerous accomplishments. He coached US Teams to nine World Championships at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup and 14 Finals. He successfully coached the Quad Team to seven World Team Cup victories. In 2015, he led the Junior Team to their first World Team Cup Championship in 15 years, following up with another title in 2017. Harnett was named Assistant Coach at the 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016
Paralympic Games. He also served as an Assistant Coach at the 2007, 2011 and 2015 Parapan American Games. During both of these Games, starting in 2004, US athletes have won 21medals, ranging from Gold to Bronze. Additionally, Harnett has trained numerous former and current World #1’s. In March of 2019, Harnett helped guide the senior leadership, within the division of Player Development at the USTA, to completely absorbing the high performance side of Wheelchair Tennis, as its own department within Player Development, for the first time in the history of the program. And among numerous honors, he was awarded the 2007 “Wheelchair Tennis Champion of the Year” by Tennis Industry Magazine and in 2008, honored as the “ITF Wheelchair Coach of the Year.” Prior to his current position Jason was the Head Tennis Professional for the City of Mission Viejo, CA, from some 20 years and is proud to be a graduate (1994) of the University of Washington where he played for the Huskies.
